Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey announces re-election campaign
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey is running for re-election. He announced his decision on Friday.On his re-election website, Gainey touts that his administration has "secured the city's first-ever affordable housing bond, inject[ed] millions of dollars to address the city's housing affordability crisis; launched a historic re-investment in the City's infrastructure; reopened the police academy, negotiated a police contract; and led a transformation in core service responsiveness that is filling more potholes, plowing streets faster, and issuing more building permits."Gainey says there is still work to do to make Pittsburgh as safe and welcoming as possible.A recent poll showed a hypothetical primary matchup between Mayor Gainey and County Controller Corey O'Connor, with Gainey and O'Connor each polling 37% of Democrats with 25% undecided.
A-K Valley athletes of the week: Freeport’s Ryan Sutara, Springdale’s Bri Ross
Report card: After scoring 51 goals in 2023, Ross continued where she left off. On Monday, she scored four goals and had two assists in Springdale’s 9-0 win over The Ellis School in Section 4-4A. Then Wednesday, the outside winger buried two more goals and had two more assists in another section win over Apollo-Ridge. The Dynamos are off to a 2-0 start in both section and overall.

On this edition of the Pirates’ Prospect Update series, we take a look at newly acquired Nick Yorke, and his journey to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. A former first round pick, Yorke had committed to play baseball at the University of Arizona, before the Boston Red Sox selected him with the 17th overall pick in 2020. Because of the cancelation of the Minor League season during the Covid-Pandemic, Yorke didn't debut for the Red Sox organization until the fall of 2020, when he took part in their fall instructional league.

West Virginia University receives $2.5 million for women’s basketball
West Virginia University (WVU) has announced a $2.5 million gift from the Hayhurst family of alumni in support of the women’s basketball program. The gift consists of a $2 million endowment, which will name the head women’s basketball coaching position in perpetuity, as well as $500,000 for day-today operations. Avid supporters of West Virginia University and WVU Athletics, the gift is the second endowment for a WVU head coaching position from the Hayhursts; in 2022 they contributed $1 million in support of the rifle program. Siblings, Ronald, the late Robert, and the late Robin Hayhurst, were all first-generation college graduates at WVU.
West Virginia men's basketball rounds out staff with August signings
New West Virginia men's basketball coach Darian DeVries continues to fill out his staff in Morgantown, with two new additions coming in the latter portion of August. DeVries didn't have to look far to find his new Director of Basketball Operations in Garrett Sturtz. Sturtz was first a player for DeVries at Drake before joining his staff as a graduate assistant.
West Virginia volleyball suffers first loss under Jen Greeny

So was the experience for WVU volleyball and first-year coach Jen Greeny on Saturday. After capturing her first win with the Mountaineers the night before, her team lost a hard-fought five set matchup with Wake Forest 3-2 (15-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-22, 15-7).
