VESTAL, NY (WIVT/WBGH) — A story of feminism and fulfilling ones destiny will be at the Anderson Center this weekend.

Summer Savoyards, a local Gilbert and Sullivan performance group, is presenting Princess Ida. The comedic opera follows Princess Ida as she breaks away from the kingdom to start a woman’s university.

At the university, the Princess tells other women that they are superior to men and that they should rule instead. However, Princess Ida was married to a prince in infancy. As the prince makes an effort to win her over, a battle of the sexes ensues.

Director Mark Roth has put a musical theatre twist on the original performance. Roth says audience members will be touched by the story.

“Especially if you’ve never seen a Gilbert and Sullivan, it should be on your bucket list. You hear incredible word play and it’s really just a delightful kind of theatre,” Roth said.

Opening night is tomorrow, July 19 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s show will also be held at 7:30 and there will be a Sunday matinee at 3.

Tickets are $28, $25 for seniors and children. To purchase, call 777-2787 or visit summersavoyards.org.
