During a recently released episode of political pundit Candace Owens’ podcast , the rapper revealed that he was inebriated at the time of making the post, which seemingly threatened the Jewish community. “I was drinking when I put up the DEFCON tweet,” Ye explained in the clip, which was filmed in 2022, but unveiled on Tuesday (Aug. 7).
West then revealed the brand of alcohol that he was drinking prior to spewing his anti-semtic rhetoric to his millions of followers. “You wanna know what alcohol I had inside me? Hennessy,” he shared, blaming the spirit with conjuring his dark side. “It turns us grey,” Ye said of Hennessy’s alleged side effects. “The demons [come out].”
According to West, his interview with Owens was his first time publicly sharing the circumstances surrounding his controversial statement, but says he kept that information secret in fear of having his “truthful” message “discredited.”
The music and fashion vanguard made the incendiary post in October 2022, threatening to take the Jewish community to task. “I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE,” he wrote on X at the time, a post that later resulted in him being removed from the platform.
Ye was publicly blasted for his anti-semitic behavior by members of the Jewish community and beyond, as various fans and peers decried his divisive commentary. The hitmaker also saw several brands dissasociate themselves from him, as Adidas, Balenciaga, Gap, and other companies cut ties with the Grammy Award winner.
West initially refused to apologize or show contrition for his statements, but later issued an apology for his “unintended outburst” in a post in December 2023. “I sincerely apologise to the Jewish community,” he wrote in the post, which was later deleted from his account. “I did not intend to hurt or demean, and I deeply regret any pain I may have caused.”
