Romania’s Ana Bărbosu Given Jordan Chiles’ Bronze Medal In Reverse Call

Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal has officially been revoked. The Athletic reports that Romanian gymnast Ana Bǎrbosu has officially been awarded Chiles’ bronze medal from the floor exercise in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Chiles initially won the medal after USA Gymnastics coach Cecile Landi landed a successful challenge. The call upped Chiles’ score by 0.1 of a point, giving her enough to place in third ahead of Bǎrbosu. Bǎrbosu was infamously seen celebrating a third-place finish before seeing the results of Landi’s challenge.

Now, the decision has been reversed after the Romanian Olympic Committee successfully challenged the USA’s initial challenge during the floor exercise. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld Romania’s appeal, which then caused USA Gymnastics to file a dispute for Chiles to keep her medal. However, the CAS ruled in favor of Romania, and Bǎrbosu was officially awarded the bronze medal in a “reallocation” ceremony held on Friday (Aug. 16) in Bucharest, Romania.

Bărbosu spoke to the audience at the ceremony and shared empathy and sympathy with teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea and USA’s Jordan Chiles for the messy situation.

“I can’t help but think about Sabrina and Jordan right now,” Bărbosu said. “It’s a difficult situation for us, with so many uncertainties and overwhelming emotions. I hope everyone understands that we have not done anything wrong at the Olympics. And that the Olympic spirit is more important than any misunderstanding between the authorities…I want to believe that the day will come when all three of us will receive a bronze medal.”

On Thursday (Aug. 15), Chiles issued a statement regarding the reverse where she called the situation “unjust” and “devastating.”

“I have no words. This decision feels unjust and comes as a significant blow, not just to me, but to everyone who has championed my journey,” Chiles said. “To add to the heartbreak, the unprompted racially driven attacks on social media are wrong and extremely hurtful. I’ve poured my heart and soul into this sport, and I am so proud to represent my culture and my country.”

“I am now confronted with one of the most challenging moments of my career,” Chiles added. “Believe me when I say I have had many. I will approach this challenge as I have others — and will make every effort to ensure that justice is done. I believe that at the end of this journey, the people in control will do the right thing.”

Jordan Chiles won the Bronze Medal. Taking away Jordan's medal and awarding it to someone who didn't win it made people question the integrity of the Olympics and damped the excitement of all the games. This one unjust act has hurt all the games played. Ban all officials who participated in this fraud from ever being an official of the Olympics again.
