Tyrese Gets Emotional On ‘The Breakfast Club’ About Grief, His Divorce, And More: “Black Men Cry”

Tyrese has delivered another memorable appearance on Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club. The R&B legend stopped by the radio show to speak about his upcoming Beautiful Pain album, 1992 film, and provide updates about his life and career. By the end of the hour-long conversation, the “Sweet Lady” singer let some tears flow as he spoke about dealing with grief, his divorce, mother’s death , and more.

Charlamagne Tha God asked Tyrese if he had the chance to process the deaths of loved ones he has experienced in his life, naming Fast & Furious co-star Paul Walker, John Singleton, his mother, both of his sisters, and several others. “Have you really taken the time to deal with all of that grief,” the host asked. “Or do you just try to stay busy to avoid it?”

The question prompted the 45-year-old crooner to get emotional and answer, “I’m doing the best I can with every 24 hours I get.” After declining the hosts’ offer to give him tissues, he continued, “Black men cry. F**k a tissue. Every 24 hours I get, I’m doing the best I can. Beautiful Pain, 1992, there is no square footage I could ever live in. There is no rims, no jewelry, no car, no net worth, no press release, no co-star, there was no collaboration in the world that could ever replace my mama. That could never fill the void of what it’s like to wake up and get married and be in something for the rest of your life and it goes away.”

The Shook One author then got up, gave Tyrese a big hug, and told him repeatedly that he loves him, before Ty continued, “This is what being grown is. I’m not doing this.” He then took the tissues the radio host handed him and threw them.

“Black men cry. When divorce has happened, women aren’t the only one that are devastated,” the “How You Gonna Act Like That” singer went on. “When a miscarriage happens, women are not the only ones that you should be checking on. When you can’t put food on the table because your career goes up and it goes down, stop calling and skipping over the man and just checking on the woman.”

Tyrese and Samantha Lee went through a tumultuous divorce in 2020 after being married for nearly four years. Additionally, the singer lost his mother in 2022 after her battle with COVID-19 and pneumonia.
