Method Man isn’t the biggest fan of how modern technology has altered the musical landscape, as the rap legend recently claimed that he’s yet to receive any payment from his music being on streaming services.

The Staten Island rep recently spoke with Wale Ogunleye, Head of Sports & Entertainment at New York venue UBS, about his lack of compensation from streaming platforms such as Spotify, Tidal, and Apple Music, among others.

“Honestly I’ve never gotten a streaming check for any of my music,” Method Man said at one point during the interview, a revelation that was shocking to many fans and commenters.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Wu-Tang Clan member spoke about the looming sector of artificial intelligence over the music industry and how it’s impacted the playing field for both artists and fans, thus far. “I’m still trying to figure out AI but I have seen some things that have made me raise an eyebrow,” Method said. “The Drake diss with the [fake] 2Pac and Snoop, the fake Kendrick [diss songs]. It’s a lot to it.”

He continued, adding, “I mean, I think it goes way deeper than that, especially when it comes to IPs [intellectual property] for artists that came from my era.” The 53-year-old says that, while he’s still coming to terms with artificial intelligence and streaming, he’s making an attempt to navigate the terrain and better understand both.

“Like I said, I’m still trying to figure it all out because there may be someone who can make a perfect mix of the two,” he said. “I’m not saying to accept it, but at least make art out of it, and that’s what I’m always for, the creative part.”

As a member of one of the most successful rap groups of all-time and being a platinum selling solo artist, Method Man’s claim that he’s not received any payment from streaming was a bit shocking to some fans, but echoes prior sentiments shared by multiple veteran acts.
