Big Sean recently sat down with Complex , where he recalled a time when Kanye West thought he chose Drake over him. The revelation came about as he discussed his 2015 single, “Blessings” from his Dark Sky Paradise album — which featured both rappers.

According to Sean, Ye expressed his liking of the track and wanted to hop on it only after he heard the finished product with Drizzy.

“I remember Ye thinking that I picked Drake over him for some reason when we made the song ‘Blessings.’ And I’m like, ‘What are you talking about, bro?'” he recalled. “Ye heard it, and Ye had been a real instrumental part of my third album, Dark Sky Paradise . He was featured on there, like, three times or something like that.”

“‘Blessings’ was the last song that got added at the very last second,” he continued. “And he heard it and he was like, ‘I got to be on the song.’ And I was like ‘Aw, sh*t bro like, it’s like, too f**king late. It’s like I’m turning– my preorder comes out in like a day. It was different than how it is now but at the same time.”

Admitting to lending his pen to the Yeezy founder, Sean added, “I helped him get the verse done. I wrote the verse with him. Right? So it’s like, ‘All right. You put me on , bro. So I’m gonna listen to whatever the f**k you say. Like, if you want to be on it, let’s figure it out and we’ll figure out the logistics later.'”

Despite Ye’s excitement to get on the song, he still took his time with delivering the verse to the Detroit spitter — knowing that Sean was on crunch time.

“I’m like, ‘Did y’all send the f**king verse, man? I’m trying to turn my sh*t in right now like, I’m not an A&R I shouldn’t even be dealing with this sh*t I told you guys to send it…’,” Sean explained. “But I’m such a, like, pushover at that time of my life. And I just was like trying to do everything, you know? I’m doing this. I’m calling the master plan. It was just like, I had no business even doing all that.”

“Blessings” eventually went on to become one of Sean’s most successful songs, peaking at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track also went four-times platinum and was nominated for a few awards.
