    WNBA’s Chicago Sky Fire Head Coach Teresa Weatherspoon After One Season

    The Chicago Sky has fired its head coach, Teresa Weatherspoon, after just one season with the team. Weatherspoon previously worked multiple seasons as an assistant coach with the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. During her brief tenure with the Sky, the Naismith Hall Of Famer and the Sky finished with a 13-27 record.

    It is the first season since 2018 that the 2021 WNBA championship team missed the playoffs.

    According to Bleacher Report, the players were “outwardly supportive during the season however, but exit interviews revealed a “disconnect,” and shared that “players noted the changing play style throughout the year and mentioned the learning curve of being a first-year coach.”

    Angel Reese, the team’s star rookie , shared a statement on social media expressing her sadness in the decision. The 22-year-old was deemed out for the remainder of the season on Sept. 7 due to a wrist injury, per ESPN . Under Weatherspoon’s guidance, she managed to set a league record with 15 consecutive double-doubles, as well as an average of 13.6 points, and 13.1 rebounds in 34 games.

    “I’m heartbroken. I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life,” shared Reese on X. “She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me. Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a Black women in sports when nobody believes in you. You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life.”

    Her statement continued, “You were the best reason & season. You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough.”

    Weatherspoon’s exit is one of two confirmed since the end of the WNBA regular season. According to the Los Angeles Times , Curt Miller, who coached the Los Angeles Sparks for two seasons, mutually parted ways with the team on Tuesday (Sept. 24) .

    “I am proud of the culture created in our locker room and strongly believe the roots have been established for a bright future,” Miller expressed in a statement. “The team is now positioned for success, and I wish the players the best heading into the 2025 season.”

    The Los Angeles Sparks ended the 2024 season with the league’s worst record at 8-32, missing the playoffs for the fourth year in a row.
