Mariah Carey is still in the business of carrying out her own tributes , and did so at the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special on Sunday (Oct. 6).

To usher in the upcoming 20th anniversary of MiMi’s 2005 comeback LP , the diva took the AMAs stage in a form-fitting gown and posed in front of a hot pink, shimmering giant ‘M’, singing a few seconds of “ Don’t Forget About Us ” before switching into a new, chilling rendition of her chart-topper, “ We Belong Together .”

Ahead of the award show, Carey spoke on her comeback era with Billboard . “People had written me off and when The Emancipation Of MiMi came out and had the song of the decade with “We Belong Together” — it had to be that big of a record for me to actually have a comeback,” she noted.

“We Belong Together” is the songbird’s second biggest single on the Billboard Hot 100. It spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on the chart, along with her holiday hit, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

However, the latter spent 65 weeks on the chart while “We Belong Together” lived there for 43 weeks.

She later got more in-depth about the forthcoming commemoration with E! News . “[The anniversary] means everything as a songwriter and a performer. It’s one of those things that’s lasted the test of time,” Carey gushed.

The mother of two also spoke on her daughter, Monroe , who’s been tip-toeing into the world of music and entertainment by singing and acting. “There’s a lot of advice to be given […] I’m super protective of my kids, but I also try to let them be their own people,” said the 55-year-old.

She hinted that the twins may hit the stage, yet again, for her Christmas tour , but wouldn’t fully confirm or deny.
