Bronny James opens up about his recent health scare in a new interview. Featured on the cover of Men’s Health magazine, the NBA rookie discusses his budding basketball career and how his game has been impacted.

“I got real on top of my routines to get back to where I was,” detailed the 19-year-old. “I had to do breathing exercises and stuff. It was a total reset. I have to stay on top of my heart medications, and I got my heart pillow.”

He continued, “My days aren’t normal anymore,” adding, “I still feel like I’m getting back, I’m getting back to where I was.”

In July 2023, James experienced cardiac arrest during a workout at the University of Southern California. He was then diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.

“It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated,” detailed a statement at the time. “We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future. We will continue to provide updates to media and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy.”

Still, the health issue has not hindered Bronny’s career, as he made history when the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft . He and LeBron James will be the first father-son duo to play for the same NBA team at the same time.

LeBron James (L) #23 and Bronny James #9 of the Los Angeles Lakers warm up before a preseason game against the Golden State Warriors at T-Mobile Arena at T-Mobile Arena on October 15, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Everything I’ve been through over the years has prepared me for this,” elaborated Bronny to Men’s Health .

“I really think it just ties back to me experiencing so much negativity and pushing through all of that. I feel like it built me to where any situation that is trying to hold me back or I’m not fighting through at the time, I can sustain my comfortability and belief in myself to keep going.”
