Volunteer of the Week: Anthony Hicks believes volunteering forms lasting relationships

The Volunteer of the Week this week is Anthony T. Hicks II. He was born and raised in Vicksburg. Hicks is employed with Vicksburg Warren School District. He is the minister of music and one of the associate ministers at Unity Temple Full Gospel Inc. Hicks is the chairman of the board of directors for Drive To Thrive

How did your volunteering for Drive to Thrive begin?

My volunteerism with the Drive To Thrive Mentoring Program began with a phone call from a former teacher whose name is Fateca Grant. She is the director who believed I was able to help fulfill the vision and mission of Drive To Thrive. I started as the chaplain of the board two years ago. Last year, in July, I became the interim chair after the former chair stepped down to fulfill other obligations. I was voted in by the board  nine months ago as the board of directors chairman for Drive To Thrive.

How long have you been volunteering with Drive to Thrive?

I have been volunteering with Drive To Thrive for three years.

What is your favorite memory while volunteering for Drive to Thrive?

While volunteering at Drive To Thrive, one of my favorite memories is participating in the ringing of the bell for the Salvation Army. The kids and their parents all volunteer to ring the bell. Being able to see each of them participate and give back to their community is heartwarming.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?

I would first thank that person because it takes a selfless individual to volunteer their time and effort. I would also explain to them how volunteering is a very rewarding and impactful service. Additionally,  I would tell them to have a heart of just paying it forward, reminding them what the Bible says in Colossians 3:23: “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men.”

What are some of your tasks while volunteering at Drive to Thrive?

While volunteering, I carry out different tasks, from serving as the chairman of the board of directors for Drive To Thrive, transporting our students back and forth from the center, to educating and mentoring our students.

What have you learned from volunteering at Drive to Thrive?

I have gained a vast amount of insight from volunteering. Volunteering is so much more than just donating your time. It is not only about making an impact but also forming lasting relationships in our community, which is something you can not put a price on.
