MADISON COUNTY, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Velma Jackson graduating seniors Zaaliyah Chesser and Cornell Bacon are making strides this year.

“I’ve been able to hold up my grades thankfully this whole year,” said Zaaliyah Chesser.

Chesser is graduating with honors. “This is the first time having all year honor roll,” Chesser said.

It wasn’t an easy feat for the archery student.

Chesser has plans to study cosmetology at Holmes Community College and pursue fashion.

Bacon is on top of his classes this year as well. It’s a personal achievement for the graduating senior.

“In previous years, I’d get lazy and fall back on classes,” he said.

Bacon thanks the support from Madison County School District: “I like how the teachers, staff members make connections with the kids. Nobody felt left out at Velma Jackson. If you needed help from someone, they would give you help.”

“Take advantage of everything while you can,” said Bacon.

Bacon plans to attend East Mississippi Community College and major in forestry.
