Vicksburg is in the running for some national recognition — and its residents can help get it.

The River City is one of 15 nominees for the Best Historical Small Town category in Newsweek magazine’s Reader’s Choice Awards.

Voting is open until 11 a.m. on Aug. 15 at this link . The top 10 will be announced on Aug. 22. Votes are limited to one vote per person, per category.

Vicksburg was selected for its Civil War history and the national park that commemorates the siege of the city in 1863. Its antebellum home and vibrant restaurant scene were also mentioned by Newsweek as reasons for inclusion.

“Beyond its battlefield and antebellum homes, Vicksburg fosters a vibrant culinary scene featuring fresh seafood, Southern comfort food and farm-to-table delight,” the magazine wrote.

The nominees for Best Historical Small Town span from coast to coast and run the gamut from colonial history, to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, to the Wild West, frontier life and more. The rest of the nominees are:

    • Berlin, Maryland
    • Bisbee, Arizona
    • Breckenridge, Colorado
    • Carmel-by-the-Sea, California
    • Cedarburg, Wisconsin
    • Cody, Wyoming
    • Concord, Massachusetts
