Vicksburg 200 Committee announces kickoff event for July 29

Together with the City of Vicksburg and the Vicksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Vicksburg 200 Committee is previewing a year of celebratory bicentennial events with a special kickoff happening in Washington Street Park (Washington
Street, between Jackson Street and Grove Street) Mon., July 29 at 9 a.m.

The event date is significant in that it is exactly six months out from the City of Vicksburg’s actual bicentennial anniversary on January 29, 2025.

The public is invited to witness the unveiling of a commemorative installation along with a schedule of five cornerstone bicentennial events happening throughout 2025. Remarks will be given by Mayor George Flaggs Jr. and Executive Director of Visit Vicksburg Laura Beth Strickland.

“Our committee has been working hard for many months, and we’re excited to finally kick things off,” Strickland said. “Everything we’re planning is designed to celebrate what has made Vicksburg the city it is today, over the past 200 years, but we’re also looking to what’s next and what our future holds.”

With the city’s past, present, and future in mind, the five major bicentennial events are centered around five themes: People; The River; Art and Culture; Lifestyle; and Government and Military. Each will be honored in its own way throughout 2025.

A reception will immediately follow the kickoff event, just down the street at the Catfish Row Museum (913 Washington Street), owned by Vicksburg 200 Committee member Linda Fondren.

Next year’s bicentennial event details will be released as they are finalized on the Vicksburg 200 Bicentennial website.
