The American Sprint Car Series National Tour roars back from a three-week hiatus for the second doubleheader weekend of the year in Kansas. First up is a stop at Lakeside Speedway for the 11th time in Series history on Friday, July 19 in Kansas City. From there, competitors will make the three-hour drive to 81 Speedway near Wichita and go to battle on Saturday, July 20.

Blood donors desperately needed during ‘trauma season’
The Community Blood Center has declared a blood emergency as supplies are short during the current high-demand season. “The weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day are often referred to as ‘trauma season’ due to a spike in traumatic accidents during the warmer months,” according to a news release from Kansas City-based CBC.

Nebraska girls club soccer team wins national championship
WICHITA, Kan. - Nebraska Select 18G won the US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup on Tuesday, in Wichita, Kan. Select is the only year-round competitive soccer program for high school-aged boys and girls west of Lincoln. The team led by former UNK soccer head coach Mike Munch went undefeated in pool play to earn the #1 seed for bracket play. Select defeated 1776 United (PA) 6-2 in the semifinals on Monday morning to advance to the championship where they defeated Lakeshore United FC (WI) 4-1.

After approving late last year a plan to spend $6 million in COVID relief funds to purchase the LaQuinta Inn at 95th Street and I-35 in Lenexa for a homeless shelter, the Johnson County Commission OK’d $60,000 as “seed money” to run the shelter for a year, and wants similar contributions from cities in the county.

RUSSELL COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 11 a.m. Tuesday in Russell County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Dodge Neon driven by Christopher T.
