Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC) applications are open until August 31

    2021-08-27

TEMPE, AZ - Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC), founded in 1980, is a city-led initiative to help youth combat teen violence, pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, depression, and lack of recreational opportunities. Though not only discussed as part of the problem but not part of the solution, teenagers lack voice and representation within local government. Tempe recognizes the importance of youth input and creates a youth advisory council composed entirely of youth. It reports directly to the Mayor and City Council.

Youth can express their ideas and interests and participate in generating ideas and organizing activities for youth in Tempe through this commission. In addition, by joining this commission, youth can have opportunities for self-development and develop leadership qualities. This commission consists of Tempe youth because they represent Tempe youth's interests, needs, and ideas.

By joining this commission, youth can express their concerns and voices. Its goal is to examine the problems local youth face and come up with the best solution, then submit the related suggestions directly to the mayor and city council. Additionally, this commission is responsible for sponsoring the annual youth event in Tempe, which supports projects that recognize young people's achievements, including representing the Tempe youth on a national, state, and local scale.

Youth interested in participating in this commission and serving as a representative can apply. The criteria for being eligible to serve on the Tempe Youth Commission are as follows:

    - Student in 8th through 12th grade

    - Residing in Tempe and or attending school in Tempe

    - Ready to serve on the commission for three years

    - Representing the voices and interests of youth

The commission has 18 to 24 members in grades 8 to 12. Do you meet the requirements and want to be part of this commission? So register yourself here sooner rather than later, since the deadline to apply is August 31.
