ASU adulting's tips for effective time management

    2021-08-31

TEMPE, AZ - Some of us might approach each day with more spontaneity, embracing everything as it comes, or, planning everything in advance, and following that plan religiously. If you fall into that second group, then this post is for you.The first thing you need to do is identify your ultimate goal. Do you want to be a better student? Are you learning to cook? Are you running a marathon? Whatever your goal is, make it clear. Understanding your goal can help you eliminate distractions.

-List your daily tasks. You don't need to make your list pretty. Just write down everything you do each day. Start with just the more important things like Classes and important dates on your syllabi: study time, work, exercise, and sleep time.

-Consider when you're most productive. Are you a morning person? Or more of a night owl? When is your energy at its highest? You may want to start adding new tasks that will help you achieve your goal. You might join a group of runners that trains in the morning, or you might try a new recipe one night every week.

-Organize your time and commitments every day with a schedule. Whether an app on your phone or an old-fashioned paper planner, plug in your tasks and make your daily schedule.

-It's okay to be flexible. Things happen. You can't plan what you have to do so rigidly that you can't fit in an unexpected visit from out of town, or you can't go to work a few extra hours if you need money for an unexpected expense.

The ability to effectively manage your time can improve your productivity and reduce stress. It may not come easy, and you may have a few setbacks, but keep at it, and it will pay off. You were learning how to manage your time while in school will help you become a better employee when you get to work.
