News Briefs: Repairs at Victoria High, Memorial Day and MORE!

REPAIR WORK CONTINUES ON VICTORIA HIGH

We also have an update on the repair project for the old Victoria High School. A total of $21,645 has been raised by the capital fund drive, town officials say, with donations still coming in. This is to help pay for roof repairs. And enough was collected that it might be enough to complete the entire roof project at one time, while leaving some money in reserve. Victoria Town Manager Rodney Newton told council members in their May 14 meeting that he expects to start the construction part of the project as of June 1.

DATE SET FOR MEMORIAL SERVICE

We now have a date for the Memorial Day service in Victoria, although it’ll be a bit earlier than normal. The VFW Post 9954 will hold a Memorial Day service on Monday, May 27, beginning at 5 p.m. That’ll be at Lakeview Cemetery in Victoria. Now if it rains, the event will move indoors to the VFW Post.

LOOKING AT SIDEWALKS

Sidewalks were also a topic of concern at the May 14 town council meeting in Victoria. Council members looked at photos of the sidewalks on 7th Street beside Victoria Drug. You can tell where the sidewalks are unleveled and settling. Victoria Town Manager Rodney Newton has proposed taking out the mulch bed and trees, as well as the bricks and drain, to instead put in stamped brick concrete with red stain. That would cost $6,825, assuming that town employees remove the mulch and trees. There is currently $10,000 set aside in Victoria’s General Fund budget for streets. Council members wanted more time to think about the idea, so it was tabled until the June meeting.

WHAT TO ADD IN TOWN?

What do you want to see at the playground in Victoria? Town council members discussed the idea of bringing in new equipment, after Vice Mayor James Elam Jr. said he had been approached by parents, upset that a lot of the playground equipment is duplicated or older. Mayor Allen Smith also raised the possibility of putting in a pickleball court at the old basketball court. Nothing was decided, as the plan is to study the idea and bring it back to a future council meeting once staff has an idea about what that would cost.
