The family of Brian Gene Gentry, the owner of Emma Jean’s Holland Burger Cafe in Victorville, said they have received an incredible amount of support since his recent passing.

The 58-year-old High Desert native, who ran the iconic Route 66-themed diner, died peacefully on July 3, his family said.

Gentry’s family recently created the "In Memory of Brian Gentry: Support His Family" GoFundMe account that allows loved ones to contribute as they prepare to lay Brian to rest.

“We have been touched by the overwhelming support from the community, as many have expressed a desire to assist our family during this incredibly challenging period,” said Brian’s daughter, Sarah Gentry, on the GoFundMe page.

“If you wish to contribute during this time of sorrow, your generosity would mean a great deal to us,” she said.

Brian leaves behind his loving wife, Shawna, and his children, Emma, Sarah and Josh, who will miss his unwavering love and support. He was also a friend to many, always ready with a kind word and a helping hand, his family said.

Victorville Mayor Elizabeth Becerra called Brian a “homegrown guy” who took over his parents’ dream, and with pride, continued to serve delicious food while treating his customers like family.

“The diner was more than a stop for truckers, it was a place where you felt at home — like you were being served by family,” Becerra said. “Brian was a true pillar of our city and he will be missed.”

A celebration of Brian’s life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on August 3, followed by a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sunset Hills Mortuary, 24000 Waalew Road in Apple Valley.

    Condolences

After Brian’s death, many in the community took to social media to share their thoughts and condolences.

Teresa and David Nava said Brian was “a hard worker and he will be deeply missed.

Teresa added that Gentry’s family would be in her family’s thoughts and prayers.

Elaine Kratofil, who shared that Brian was a great guy and a terrific cook, also shared her deepest condolences to Shawna and the family,

Melissa Van Nimwegen said, “So sorry to hear this, healing prayers for his family, may he R.I.P. he will never be forgotten.”

“Emma Jeans was the first, and for several years, the only truck stop in the High Desert,” said Donald Ghost, who added that Brian’s cafe welcomed truck drivers, back when many others would not.

“I have enjoyed the excellent treatment and nice people when I was still working,” Ghost said. “Sad to lose a nice person.:

Jessica Leming said, “I’m so very sorry!!! He was such a wonderful gentleman to myself and my family. My prayers are with Shawna and her family.”

Ali Hamilton shared how she got the pleasure of meeting Brian, who she called a “wonderful soul” who will be missed.
