New stop signs to be installed on busy Hesperia roadway

City officials have announced the scheduled installation of an all-way stop along busy Arrowhead Lake Road in Hesperia.

The all-way stop will be installed on May 16 at the intersection of Arrowhead Lake Road and Danbury Avenue. There are currently stop signs on Danbury Avenue, on each side of Lake Arrowhead Road.

During and after the installation of the stop signs, commuters are advised to use extreme caution while traveling in the vicinity and to be alert to the new traffic pattern, city officials said.

At the intersection, Hesperia Mesa Mart is located on the northwest corner of the intersection, while Hesperia Mobile Home Estates is located on the east side.

The intersection handles traffic from residents, and many traveling to and from Hesperia Lake Park, Ranchero Road, Highway 173, Mojave River Forks Regional Park and the San Bernardino Mountains

Many commuters from Apple Valley also pass through the intersection as they commute to and from Interstate 15.

    A ‘speedway’

As the local population has increased so has the traffic through the intersection, said Monty Monroe, 73, who lives west of the intersection.

“We moved to Hesperia in the ‘80s when there were fewer houses and almost no traffic,” Monroe told the Daily Press.

Monroe explained that 40 years ago, he could make a left onto Lake Arrowhead Road from Danbury Avenue without waiting for traffic.

“Back then, you might see one car pass by every 60 seconds, but not today,” Monroe said. “Now, you have to wait while several cars pass through, some going close to 70 miles per hour.”

Many claim Lake Arrowhead Road is “a speedway” from Rock Springs Road south past Danbury Avenue and onto Hesperia Lake Park.

Apple Valley resident Charlie Francisco, 42, hopes a traffic signal will soon replace the all-way stop at the intersection.

“With stop signs, that intersection is going to be backed up in the morning and late afternoon,” said Francisco, who passes through the intersection on his way to and from work.

hesperia just loves to put in stop signs but their residents never seem to know the right of way rules so it turns into a cluster fuck with one person going at a time.
