Bear Valley Road to receive new four-way stop intersection

The Victorville City Council unanimously approved a four-way stop control at a Bear Valley Road intersection in a remote part of the city.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the council approved the four-way stop at the intersection of Bear Valley and Monte Vista roads, just west of Highway 395.

City Manager Keith Metzler told the council the item was brought forward based on a resident-generated traffic complaint-based investigation conducted by city staff.

The right-of-way at the intersection of Bear Valley and Monte Vista is split between Victorville on the east and San Bernardino County on the west side.

Additionally, Bear Valley Road is designated as Duncan Road on the county’s side.

Coordination with the San Bernardino County Department of Public Works will be required for the installation of the four-way stop control.

City engineering staff contacted the county to propose the installation of the multi-way stop control at the intersection, with the county agreeing to install a multi-way stop control in their right-of-way based on the council’s approval.

There will be no fiscal impact resulting from installation which aims to enhance public safety that supports a thriving and growing community, city staff said.

Metzler stated that the four-way stop is an interim measure until the city has the final resources to fund the installation of a permanent traffic signal.

Councilwoman Debra Jones thanked the unidentified resident for “expressing care and concern” over the unsafe intersection. Councilwoman Leslie Irving echoed Jones’ sentiment.
