Volunteers collect more than 5.5 tons of trash during Victorville Community Cleanup Day

Nearly 800 volunteers picked up more than five tons of trash during Victorville's Community Cleanup Day event last month, organizers have tallied.

A total of 780 residents took part in the effort on April 20, according to city officials. They filled roughly 1,950 bags with litter, amounting to 5.57 tons.

Volunteers ranged in age from 5 to 80 years old, divided into 37 teams, city officials said.

A host of local businesses and organizations sponsored the event, and 12 restaurants provided discounts to volunteers.

The most commonly encountered items were food wrappers, bottles and cans, officials said. A piano was among the less-common items found this year.

"The City of Victorville would like to thank our generous event sponsors, along with the 780 volunteers who joined together to make the April 20, 2024 Victorville Community Cleanup Day a great success," city officials said in a written statement.

Victorville Community Cleanup Day events are held twice a year. The next one is scheduled to take place on Oct. 26.
