Earthquake rattles Las Vegas area

A preliminary 4.4-magnitude earthquake and aftershock rattled the Las Vegas area Tuesday night.

The initial earthquake occurred around 8:06 p.m. in the Indian Springs area, roughly 30 miles north of Las Vegas, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

About six minutes later, a 2.9-magnitude aftershock was reported in the same area.

The larger quake, with a depth of 13 kilometers, was felt in Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City and portions of Death Valley, the USGS reported.

Authorities said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
