Aamir Sneed’s first-ever varsity start for the defending Desert Sky League champions was quite the success Friday night.

The quarterback threw four touchdown passes to help lead the Granite Hills football team to a lopsided 70-14 victory over Lake Mead Academy, of Henderson, NV.

“Aamir did really well,” Granite Hills head coach Alex Gonzalez said of the junior. “He showed a lot of confidence and good decision-making.”

The Cougars struck early and often, racking up 56 points alone in the first half.

Granite Hills also got two rushing touchdowns from Kaylen Edwards and Sayani Long. Edwards also caught a touchdown pass.

Braylen Salazar caught two touchdown passes. Zaine Rocca, Nathanial Kim, Max Frierson and Broden Reeves each scored a touchdown.

Defensively, Berto Sanchez and Quincy Lockart each recovered a fumble and Deshawn Osborne intercepted a pass.

The Cougars are back in action next week in a Thursday night game on the road against Carter, which they beat 40-14 last season.

Here’s a look at some of the other local football games, and a couple of volleyball scores.

Orange Vista 20, Apple Valley 17

At Perris, the Sun Devils attempted to rally from a 14-point deficit in the second half and fell just short on Thursday night.

Apple Valley got on the board quickly as quarterback Jake Higgs threw a touchdown pass to Dominic Bechtel.

Orange Vista came right back and led 13-6 at halftime, and upped the lead to 14 points midway through the third quarter.

A deep pass from Higgs to Bechtel set the Sun Devils for a 40-yard field goal from Matthew Rohrbaugh to cut the lead to 11 points.

Another deep pass from Higgs to Dylan Jarrard set up Jacob Cabrera, punching the ball in from three yards out and the deficit was down to three points.

Apple Valley's defense forced a turnover on downs the following drive, taking over at its own 20-yard line. A trick play, a 67-yard pass from Aryav Biswas to Brayden Cady, set the Sun Devils up in the red zone.

But Apple Valley wasn't able to get a play off on fourth down, and Orange Vista won the game.

Higgs ended with six passes for 121 yards. Cabrera, a junior, led the ground game with 16 carries for 80 yards.

The Sun Devils will be home next week for their home opener against Chaparral.

    Serrano 31, Eisenhower 8

At Rialto, the Diamondbacks racked up all 31 points in the first half and cruised to victory to open the season.

Quarterback Isaiah Romo had a big game in his first start for Serrano. Romo passed for 80 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for another 80 yards with two touchdowns.

Trevor McSween ran for 100 yards and scored a touchdown. Cade LaFever had 30 receiving yards with a touchdown.

Davion Macauley led the defense with two sacks.

The Diamondbacks will host Patriot in a Thursday night game for the home opener next week.

    Victor Valley 35, Montclair 6

At Montclair, the Jackrabbits took a 21-point lead into halftime and went on to beat the Cavaliers by 29 points in Friday’s season opener.

Quarterback Robert Middlebrooks threw two touchdown passes to Nikolas Blocker and also ran one in.

Xavier Mattews scored a 68-yard touchdown run, and Victor Villa also scored a rushing touchdown.

The Jackrabbits are back on the road next week against Rialto, which they beat 34-21.

    Norte Vista 32, Silverado 13

At Riverside, the Hawks dropped their season opener on Friday night, extending the program's losing streak to 12 games.

Silverado, which went winless last season, has not won a game since Oct. 28, 2022.

Norte Vista scored a touchdown midway through the first quarter for a quick 6-0 lead. Norte Vista scored again to start the second quarter and converted a two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.

Silverado got on the board midway through the second quarter with a touchdown run from quarterback Jace Weiss to pull within seven points.

But it was all Norte Vista in the second half, taking a 26-7 lead into the fourth quarter. Weiss also threw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks will be home next week for their home opener against Yucaipa, which they lost to 35-6 last season.
