High Desert job commuters and travelers in Southern California will discover 10 miles of new toll lanes on Interstate 10 between the San Bernardino and Los Angeles county lines.

The opening of the SB Express Lanes will mark the first phase of tolled and HOV 3+ lanes to open in San Bernardino County. The two express toll lanes, which run east and west generally from Ontario just west of I-15 to Montclair, will be operational on Thursday.

San Bernardino County Transportation Authority officials expect the new lanes to relieve congestion, improve traffic flow, and provide travel time savings and trip reliability.

The transportation authority on Wednesday, showcased the toll lanes to the media just before the busy Labor Day weekend.

Other options to pay include the online method within five days of using the toll lanes. Additionally, in person at the Walk-In Center, 10500 Civic Center Dr. in Rancho Cucamonga.

Drivers can enter and exit the SB Express Lanes on I-10 from multiple points. Entering and exiting the SB Express Lanes at points other than those indicated is illegal, authorities said.

    More lanes planned

Two additional toll lane phases on I-10 from Ontario to Redlands are planned that will bring a total of 33 miles of express lanes through one of the most congested corridors in the county, county transportation officials said.

Interstate 10 sees an average of 265,000 daily local, commuter and interstate travelers.
