There were 9,411 votes cast this week in the first race for the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week poll of the school year.

Hesperia’s La'Brejai West ended with 48.39% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.

The star volleyball player received 4,554 votes, beating out seven other high school athletes from across the High Desert.

To earn a spot on this week’s ballot, West had a big performance in two victories for the Scorpions, racking up 29 kills. West led Hesperia with 11 kills, a block and three digs in a 3-0 victory over Granite Hills on Aug. 19. She followed that up the next day with 18 kills, an ace, two blocks and an assist in a 3-0 victory over Adelanto

In the voting, West beat out Serrano’s Issiah Romo, who ended with 37.94% at 3,571 total votes.

The nominees were selected based on performances between Aug. 19 to 24.

Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.

Want to get to know our winner a little better? Check out what West had to say.

    • How long have you been playing your sport and how did you get started: I’ve been playing volleyball for four years. I started on JV my freshman year and I have played varsity at Hesperia the last three years.
    • What do you like most about your sport: I like how intense it is after I get a kill, how loud me and my team can get.
    • Do you have a pregame ritual: My pregame ritual is to help “coach” our freshman and JV, I love being goofy one on the sidelines yelling and cheering making them laugh.
    • What’s your most memorable sports moment: My most memorable moment would be a clip I have of my first year on varsity when we played Apple Valley and they hit it, I blocked it, they hit it again, I blocked it. But the last time they tried to get it back over they overpassed it and I put it right in the middle of the court.
    • If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be and why: Just like Selena Gomez says “I wouldn’t wanna be anybody else,” I think that wanting to be someone else is a trap because if you like it too much when you get back to being yourself what have you really done.
    • Someone hands you $1 million, how would you spend it: The people in my house are getting $25,000 each including me and the rest is going to savings. Can’t get too greedy. But for me, half of my $25,000 is being spent on tattoos, my mom has got me addicted.
    • Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world and why: I want to go to Jamaica, I love the way they have so much energy and I wanna drink out of a pineapple.
    • If you had an extra hour every day, how would you spend it: I am absolutely spending it asleep.
    • What superpower do you wish you had: I wish I could teleport, it would make transportation so much easier.
    • Favorite sports team: Ohio State Buckeyes
    • Favorite athlete: Steph Curry
    • Favorite superhero: Me, because I’m Batman.
    • Favorite show: “Rick and Morty”
    • Favorite movie: “The Princess and the Frog” or “Brave”
    • Favorite song: “Ex-Factor” by Lauryn Hill
    • Favorite meal: My mom's stuffed salmon.
    • Favorite local restaurant: Fresh Wok
    • Favorite app: Wells Fargo, I love seeing my money come through.
