    High Desert Sports Roundup: Roddy Taylor records a dozen sacks to lead Hesperia Christian

    The Hesperia Christian football team celebrated the season opener at home with a 49-0 victory over Entrepreneur on Friday night.

    Roddy Taylor, the reigning Agape League Defensive Player of the Year, was a menace on the field racking up 12 sacks.

    Hesperia Christian jumped out to a quick lead and then the defense quickly made its presence felt by recording a safety after the score. Later in the first quarter, Josh Lewis intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown and a 22-0 lead.

    Dakota McCloud ended the night with five passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns, as well as an interception. Lewis took four carries for 37 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Alfonzo ended with five carries for 32 yards and two touchdowns.

    The Patriots quickly jump into Agape League action next week against University Careers and Sports Academy, followed by a stretch of four nonleague games.

    Here’s a look at some of the other local Week 1 football games, along with a few volleyball scores:

    Oak Hills 49, Highland 24

    At Palmdale, the Bulldogs scored 28 points in the second half to pull off a road victory on Friday night.

    Oak Hills led 21-18 at halftime, and outscored Highland by 22 points in the second half.

    Karson Cox, who is committed to UCLA, ended the night with 198 rushing yards and five touchdowns to lead the ground-and-pound.

    Royalton Allen added 103 rushing yards, Jacob Webster scrambled for 63 yards and Kharlos Dew finished right behind with 61 yards. The Bulldogs also got rushing touchdowns from Dews, Zander Silvera and CJ Martin.

    Oak Hills (2-0) will head back to the Antelope Valley next week to take on Palmdale.

    Chaparral 49, Apple Valley 28

    At Apple Valley, the Sun Devils held their own Friday night, matched up against one of the top teams in the state.

    Outmatched on paper, according to the CalPreps.com rating system, Apple Valley went blow-for-blow with Chaparral, trailing 28-21 at halftime. Apple Valley entered with a rating of -1, while Chaparral was at 45.3.

    Chaparral led 35-28 entering the fourth quarter and then pulled away.

    Apple Valley quarterback Jake Higgs threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

    The Sun Devils (0-2) are back home next week for a Friday night game against Corona del Sol, of Tempe, Az.

    Granite Hills 39, Carter 22

    At Rialto, Quarterback Aamir Sneed completed seven passes for 114 yards and a touchdown, while also adding 39 rushing yards and two touchdowns on five scrambles to lead the Cougars on Thursday night.

    Sayani Long led the backfield with 15 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown. Kaylen Edwards broke off an 85-yard touchdown.

    Defensively, Nehemiah Hankins blocked a punt that was scooped up and returned for a touchdown by Roberto Sanchez.

    Granite Hills (2-0) takes on Hesperia in a Thursday night game at the new Victor Valley College football stadium.

    Victor Valley 22, Rialto 15

    At Rialto, the Jackrabbits held the Knights scoreless in the second half and rallied back to pull off a victory and improve to 2-0 on the season.

    Rialto led 15-7 at halftime, and the Jackrabbits took the lead early in the fourth quarter on a 60-yard rushing touchdown from Xavier Matthews. He ended the night with seven carries for 101 yards to lead the backfield.

    Victor Villa added 63 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, while Nikolas Blocker took two carries for 32 yards and a touchdown, and also caught a 30-yard pass.

    The Jackrabbits will celebrate their home opener next week in a Thursday night game against Twentynine Palms.

    Prep Volleyball

    Apple Valley 3, Moreno Valley 0

    At Apple Valley, the Sun Devils improved to 9-2 on the season with a sweep (25-13, 25-19, 25-20) on Aug. 29.

    Leah Hambrick led the way with 14 kills, seven digs and an ace, and Kennedy Klaers dished 15 assists with dive kills, two digs and an ace.

    Hambrick also racked up 20 kills with two aces and 18 digs in a 3-2 victory over Granite Hills earlier in the week.

    Apple Valley wraps up nonleague action at home against Carter on Tuesday before hosting Oak Hills to begin Mojave River League action on Thursday.

    Sultana 3, Adelanto 0

    At Adelanto, the Sultans wrapped up nonleague play with a sweep (25-15, 25-15, 25-5) on Aug. 29 as Maggie Warden and Brea Whittemore each spiked eight kills.

    Warden added three digs, and Whittemore had one dig. Isabelle Bartle served six aces, and Breezy De Mase five.

    Sultana (10-3) opens Mojave River League play at home Thursday against Burroughs.

    Hesperia 3, Palm Springs 0

    At Hesperia, the Scorpions improved to 11-4 on the season, ending nonleague play with a sweep (25-18, 27-25, 25-13) on Aug. 27.

    La'Brejai West spiked 12 kills with three blocks, an ace, a dig and an assist, and Dylanna Akwaboah dished 24 assists with 14 digs, six kills and an ace.

    Hesperia hosts Serrano on Thursday to begin Mojave River League action.
