Two people walked away uninjured after their small plane crashed and rolled multiple times in the Mojave Desert on Labor Day.

Around 12:30 p.m. Monday, San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies responded to the report of a small plane crash in the 87000 Block of National Trails Highway, or Old Route 66, in Amboy.

Morongo Basin sheriff's deputies responded along with the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the California Highway Patrol, and rangers with the California State Park Police.

The sheriff's station coordinated the crash investigation with Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board officials.

The investigation showed that the pilot and one passenger had landed their Cessna 152 airplane near Roy's Café in Amboy on the morning of Labor Day. CHP logs reported that the occupants were a man and a woman.

A short time later, the pilot prepared for take-off by taxiing the plane onto the pavement of National Trails Highway and accelerating westbound down the roadway, authorities said.

The plane became airborne, however, the starboard, or right wing of the plane did not gain enough altitude and struck a street caution sign, according to sheriff’s officials. The plane overturned, rolled multiple times and came to rest in a desert field.

The pilot and passenger were able to get out of the Cessna and were found with no injuries, authorities stated.
