California Highway Patrol's Barstow Office is planning a checkpoint Friday night to screen drivers for sobriety and valid licenses, officials said.

The checkpoint will be held from 7 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location in the Barstow/Lenwood area, the agency announced in a written statement.

"Traffic permitting, all drivers will be screened as they pass through the checkpoint," the statement said. "Those drivers that have been drinking or exhibit signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be detained for further evaluation and field testing. Drivers who are determined to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be physically arrested and their vehicles towed away."

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on the frequency of DUI-related crashes and arrests, officials said.

In addition to removing intoxicated drivers from the roadway, checkpoints also increase public awareness about the issue, according to the statement.
