The Law Offices of the Public Defender of San Bernardino County will bring its Mobile Defense Unit to Barstow.

The county’s state-of-the-art mobile defense RV will set up shop from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Barstow Church of God in Christ, 1375 Bishop Nathaniel Jones Jr. Way in Barstow .

The mobile defense team will offer legal services to residents that include clearing bench warrants, removing outstanding fines and starting the record-clearing process.

San Bernardino County Superior Court officials will also be available to provide self-help assistance by answering questions regarding family law, child support, guardianship, landlord/tenant and small claims court procedures.

GoGo Barstow, High Desert Black Worker Center, Reimagining Our Communities, and other community partners will be on-site to provide additional resources.

    Providing direct assistance

In June, Public Defender Thomas Sone emphasized its mobile defense program helping residents in remote communities.

“We have the largest county in the nation, so we are trying to develop creative ideas to provide direct assistance and relief to the community,” said Sone. “Accessing the courthouse can be a challenge for residents in remote areas. The Mobile Defense Program aims to mitigate these challenges by bringing legal services directly to these isolated areas,” Sone added.

During a Landers event in May, the mobile defense unit resolved over 80 cases from courthouses in Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, and the Morongo Basin.

County officials said the Lander’s visit resolved pending cases, which helped to remove barriers to employment, such as driver’s license holds, thereby improving each client’s overall quality of life.

While no appointment is necessary, pre-registration will secure your spot and help expedite the process on the day of the event.
