Victor Valley College’s first-ever football game held in the brand-new stadium got off to a weird start and then ended on a sour note Saturday night.
The Rams led by three points at halftime, then were held to just seven points in the second half and lost 52-34 to Santa Monica College on the historic night.
After three minutes of action, the game between Victor Valley College and Santa Monica College entered a lengthy weather delay. Kickoff was at 5 p.m., and by the time the action commenced it was 5:53 p.m.
It took just one play for Santa Monica College to score the first-ever touchdown in the new stadium, on a 2-yard punch in.
The Rams scored their first touchdown of the season with 4:36 left in the first quarter after Larayon Minor II, a Granite Hills grad, took a direct snap from three yards out to even the score.
That started a series of drives where the teams exchanged scores.

Santa Monica College struck right back two minutes later, retaking a 14-7 lead on a 1-yard run.
Victor Valley College also needed two minutes to even up the score again. The Rams scored with 21 seconds left in the first quarter on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Seth Burbine to Cael Meisman.
Following another touchdown from the Corsairs, Hinojos threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Latavion Lispcomb, an Oak Hills grad, to even up the score 21-21 with 10:49 left in the first half.
Devon Smith, a Granite Hills grad, intercepted a pass for the Rams at the 40-yard line with 6:18 left in the second quarter. That led to the Rams taking the lead as Burbine threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Minor for a 27-21 lead two minutes later.
Santa Monica College settled for a 41-yard field goal on the following possession, cutting VVC's lead to 27-24 right before halftime.
Then the wheels fell off, as Santa Monica College took the kickoff to start the third quarter 89-yard to retake the lead. A 50-yard touchdown pass from the Corsairs followed and they went to outscore the Rams the rest of the way.
The Rams’ lone touchdown in the second half was a 21-yard touchdown pass from Burbine to Meisman.
Victor Valley College will be on the road the next two weeks. The Rams will head to Glendale College next week, followed by a trip to Los Angeles Valley College the next week.
