These haunted hotel rooms in California are the spookiest places to spend Halloween

By McKenna Mobley, Victorville Daily Press,

The Shining's Stanley Hotel, Bates Motel, Roald Dahl's Hotel Excelsior − hotels set the stage for some of the most chilling horror movies on the scene.

To the absolute horrification of Halloween skeptics and horror cynics, some of the most famously haunted California hotels are available to the public for an overnight ghost hunt.

The team at WinstonsBeds.com has researched and revealed haunted locations across the state and identified the most harrowing rooms guests can spend a night in. The list includes Marilyn Monroe's room at Hotel Roosevelt where the late actress's ghost can be allegedly seen in the room's mirror at the "witching hour."

Rooms found by WinstonsBeds have been proven by their team to possess an air of paranormal activity.

Other hotels listed by the Daily Press include long-recognized haunted locations like the Joshua Tree Inn and other occulted lodgings.

    Winston's Haunted Hotel Rooms

The Queen Mary − Stateroom B340

Stranger things are commonplace at the Queen Mary. The WWII ship comes alive during the Halloween season with its massive Halloween festival Dark Harbor, which features haunted mazes, immersive attractions, monsters, and more.

The Queen Mary isn't restricted to the supernatural only during the fall, however. Many guests recall paranormal activity during their stay year-round. Stateroom B340 is believed to be one of the most haunted spots on the ship after a passenger died in the room in 1948.

Nearly 20 years later, reports of another passenger awakened to bed covers being pulled off the bed by a man standing at the foot would be made. The man vanished into thin air once ship officials were contacted.

According to Winston's, many guests who stay in this enchanted room today report hearing knocking noises during the middle of the night and seeing bathroom lights turn on and off. The ship has a long, haunting history of casualties, including a catastrophic collision wherein 300 people drowned.

Room B340 has recently opened again to the public on Friday the 13th of last month for those seeking a spooky overnight experience.

Queen Anne Hotel - Room 410

Located in San Francisco, the Queen Anne Hotel was once a girl's boarding school in the 1890s and is now rumored to be haunted by its former headmistress, Miss Mary Lake.

Reports indicate that Lake is a friendly ghost who sings throughout the night, unpacks guests upon their arrival, and helps them settle in. Room 410, previously Miss Mary Lake’s office, is said to be the most haunted. One guest reportedly woke up on the floor with their bedding tucked around them.

Contrary to popular belief, Lake did not die in the infamous room 410. Perhaps she is just looking over the tidiness of the hotel. Whatever the case for the ghost sightings, there is no denying that room 410 is subject to the unexplainable.

    Chateau Marmont, Bungalow 3

Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard rose to fame as a hotspot for 20th-century celebrities. A-list celebrities can still be seen at the hotel/acclaimed Hollywood restaurant today, but so can alleged apparitions.

American actor and Saturday Night Live comedian John Belushi was found dead in the hotel's Bungalow 3 from a drug overdose in 1982. Since his death, many families that have stayed in the same room have reported their children engaging in conversation with an imaginary “funny man."

Other purportedly haunted rooms at the Chateau include rooms 43 and 79, where guests have reported windows opening on their own, moving furniture, and eerie voices throughout the night, and ghost sightings.

    1859 Historic National Hotel

Flo the now-friendly ghost witnessed the murder of her husband in the 1859 Historic National Hotel in Jamestown, California, near Yosemite National Park.

After finding her husband's body in a pool of blood, Flo spent the next few days sobbing in her room before the hotel staff found her dead in her wedding gown. Although there is no information as to which room Flo stayed in, it is believed that she generally stays upstairs in the rooms at the front of the hotel.

Flo leaves her mark on guests by sobbing in the hallways after dusk, pouring clothes onto the floor from suitcases, slamming doors, and intentionally flickering lights. As a result of Flo's undeniable presence in the hotel, each room is allegedly equipped with a notebook to report any suspicious, esoteric activity.

Call the hotel at 209-984-3446 or 800-894-3446 to book a stay.

Hotel Del Coronado − Room 302

Hotel Del Coronado made a haunted name for itself after the mysterious death of hotel guest Kate Morgan in 1892. The Southern California hotel was a long-time pitstop for Hollywood stars and political figures up to that date, but the various sightings of Morgan draped in black have given "The Del" a horror reputation instead of one of luxury.

During her stay, she was found dead after being shot in the head in room 302 − now 3327 − and while it was first ruled as suicide, it was later discovered that the bullet in her head did not match the gun found in her hand.

Since then, Morgan's presence has been felt in the hotel with guests reporting hearing footsteps and seeing her gliding down a corridor or standing by the same window as if waiting for someone to return. Morgan’s room is the most requested in the hotel.

Visit www.hoteldel.com to book your stay with the ghost of Morgan.

    Hotel Roosevelt − Suite 1200

Named after President Roosevelt, Hotel Roosevelt has hosted celebrities from Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin to the first Academy Awards ceremony during the "golden era."

Some Hollywood stars, however, have allegedly never checked out.

Marilyn Monroe lived at the Roosevelt for two years, in Suite 1200, during the early parts of her career and it’s believed that her ghost still resides in the hotel. Some guests have reported seeing her ghost in Room 1200's mirror.

If Suite 1200 is booked, the ghost of the trumpet troubadour Montgomery Clift can be felt tantalizing from the afterlife in room 928. Guests in this room have experienced a pat on the back only to turn around to no one there, and trumpet music coming from the empty corridor.

The Glen Tavern Inn − Rooms 307 and 308

Located in Santa Paula, Ventura County, the 1911 Glen Tavern Inn is soiled in seedy history. The hotel was an active brothel during the prohibition era with rumored murders taking place behind the hotel's closed doors.

As a result, several ghosts have been sighted roaming the Glen Tavern Inn halls. The most common paranormal occurrence among guests are belongings being knocked off furniture with no explanation.

Room 307 is said to be haunted by Rose, a "lady of the night" who was beheaded after servicing one of her clients during the hotel's brothel days. Guests can also stay in room 308, where Cowboy Calvin was shot in the head after being caught cheating while gambling.

    Joshua Tree Inn

The death and unconventional postmortem ritual with country singer Gram Parsons's body put the Joshua Tree Inn on the insidious map in 1973. Parsons died in room 8 in the Joshua Tree Inn after an alleged overdose on morphine.

His road manager Phil Kaufman and assistant Michael Martin took the body into the Joshua Tree backcountry and set it ablaze, under the impression that they would be able to DIY cremate their friend.

Unable to finish the task, half of his charred body was recovered and sent to his family in New Orleans.

Reports of random door openings and closings have been made at the Joshua Tree Inn, as well as the unlocking of doors and the movement of furniture. Book your stay at www.joshuatreeinn to test the paranormal theory at the inn.

    Bracken Fern Manor, Lake Arrowhead

Lake Arrowhead's Bracken Fern Manor has been riddled with tales of gangsters like Benjamin ‘Bugsy’ Siegel, a well-known mafia hitman and enforcer in the 1920s and '30s from New York City.

The manor was also rumored to have served as a brothel during the Prohibition period, and the nearby Tudor House hosted illegal gambling and liquor activities, further attracting gangsters to the area.

A notable ghost on the property is that of Violet, a "lady of the night" from the brothel days who committed suicide after her lover was killed by the mob. It's been said that some have smelled the scent of a lady's perfume while others noticed a smoke-like apparition near the mirrors, likely that of Violet.

Visit www.tudorhouseentertainment.com to experience the chilling presence of Violet, or partake in a piece of 20th-century history at "Bugsy's Bar."

    Mission Inn Riverside

An official Historic Hotel of America , The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa leans into its reputation as one of the most haunted hotels in Southern California by offering guests a night's stay in haunted rooms and by opening up its catacombs for tours this fall.

Legend has it that the Mission Inn is haunted by Frank and Alice Miller, the children of the original hotel owner. Alice’s room on the fourth floor and Frank’s room in the Northeast corner are said hotspots for the supernatural activity, as well as the bridal suite, room number 215, and the catacombs that run under the inn.

Halloween season tours: Mission Inn Riverside to host catacombs tour for the first time

This year is the first time the hotel is doing its "Spooktacular" Halloween tour through November, which offers guests an "exclusive glimpse into the catacombs of the hotel- a subterranean area that has typically been off-limits to curious visitors," the hotel said in a statement on Instagram.

The 1-hour tour will run $40 per head, $30 per hotel guest.

    Cecil Hotel

For many, the Cecil Hotel is the most haunted in Los Angeles.

Unlike previously mentioned ghosts, the Cecil is known for more horrific ghost hangouts, put on the map by infamous serial killer Richard Ramirez .

Between 1984 to 1985, Ramirez, also known as the "Night Stalker," used the Cecil Hotel as his base of operations. During this time, he murdered at least 38 people in a sinister killing spree that would go down in California history.

Another serial killer, Jack Unterweger, would also murder three sex workers at the Cecil Hotel after he was released from prison for first-degree murder.

Canadian tourist Elisa Lam was perhaps the most famous guest at the Cecil Hotel. In 2013, an employee discovered her naked body floating in the water tanks on the hotel's roof . The case was ruled an accidental drowning, but there are many specific factors that suggest otherwise.

These murders and more have made the Cecil Hotel a top priority to visit during the spooky season. The re-branded hotel is now called Hotel on Main and although the hotel is active on the booking reservation platform Agoda , information about its availability is limited.

    Banning House Lodge, Catalina Island

Three spirits are said to be lingering around the Banning House. The "White Lady," a fisherman spirit, and Hollywood A-list actress Natalie Wood, who drowned in the nearby Catalina waters.

The White Lady's quiet presence has been noticed in each of the 11 rooms, patiently sitting in a chair unbothered and unmoved. The fisherman is around when an overwhelming scent of tobacco and fresh fish consumes hotel guests. Natalie Wood has been reportedly seen near the hotel beach aimlessly wondering.
