The Indianapolis Colts delivered a major blow to their defense on Tuesday, announcing that Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner has been placed on injured reserve.

Buckner sustained a high-ankle sprain in his right leg during the Colts’ 16-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. With the move to injured reserve, Buckner will miss at least the next four games, leaving a sizable void on the Colts’ defensive front.

Buckner was forced to exit the game after his ankle was rolled up on during the second half. Already limited by a back injury, Buckner was playing on a pitch count.

As he was carted off the field, there was concern that the injury could have been more severe, but the diagnosis of a high-ankle sprain, while serious, is better than feared alternatives.

Since joining the Colts in 2020, Buckner has been a cornerstone of their defense. The multi-year captain and former All-Pro has been a disruptive force in both the pass rush and run defense, proving to be the team’s most consistent and impactful defensive player.

Losing Buckner for an extended period is a tough setback for a Colts defense that has relied heavily on his presence in the trenches. His absence will test the depth and adaptability of the defensive unit, which will struggle to replace his elite combination of strength, agility, and leadership.

In a corresponding move, the Colts have activated pass rusher Genard Avery to the active roster.

Avery, who joined the Colts in 2023 but was previously placed on injured reserve, will now get the opportunity to help bolster a defensive line that has struggled against the run early in the season. Avery’s return provides a needed boost, but it will be difficult for anyone to replicate Buckner’s dominant performance on the interior.

The Colts have also made several adjustments to their practice squad. Defensive tackle Adam Gotsis, cornerback Gregory Junior, and defensive end Titus Leo have been signed, while defensive tackle McTelvin Agim and cornerback Ameer Speed have been released.

Gotsis, an eight-year NFL veteran with stints in Denver and Jacksonville, brings a wealth of experience and solid production with 54 career tackles, 10.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. Junior has spent the last two seasons with the Jaguars, making 17 tackles and registering one pass deflection.

With Buckner sidelined, the Colts will look to Grover Stewart, Raekwon Davis, and Taven Bryan to step up and anchor the interior of the defensive line. The trio will face their first test this Sunday when the Colts take on the Chicago Bears.

While the loss of Buckner is significant, the Colts hope their collective depth and new additions can keep the defense competitive until their star defensive tackle returns to the field.

This stretch without Buckner will be pivotal for the Indianapolis Colts, not only in maintaining their defensive performance but also in finding ways to stay competitive in a tough AFC South race.
