Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid has committed his long-term future to the franchise, agreeing to a three-year, $192.9 million contract extension. The deal ensures the former NBA MVP’s total earnings with the Sixers will reach $299.5 million through the 2028-29 season.

Embiid, who has been the face of the team since he was drafted in 2014, expressed his desire to stay with the team for the rest of his career.

“Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career,” Embiid shared on Instagram after the announcement. “I love this community and everything you’ve given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship, and I think we’re just getting started!”

Embiid’s Path Forward and Financial Milestones

Under this new deal, Embiid will decline his $59 million player option for the 2026-27 season, opting for the extension that guarantees him $69 million in its final year.

By the time the contract concludes, Embiid’s career earnings will total an incredible $514.8 million, making him the fourth-highest-paid player in NBA history. He now ranks just behind LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Paul George in career earnings.

The Sixers’ ownership group expressed their enthusiasm over retaining their star player. Josh Harris, managing partner of the ownership group, praised Embiid as “one of the greatest Sixers of all time” and said the team was thrilled to have him under contract for the long haul.

“Joel is a great family man, leader, and person. He is an elite two-way player with a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that this league has rarely — if ever — seen. He is integral to this franchise’s quest for another NBA Championship, and we are honored that he continues to choose this organization as his NBA home,” Harris said in a statement.

A Massive Offseason for the Sixers

Embiid’s extension is just one of several key moves for the Sixers this offseason. In addition to locking in their MVP, the team also extended All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey on a $204 million deal and brought in forward Paul George on a four-year, $212 million contract.

To further bolster their lineup, Philadelphia signed free agents Caleb Martin, Eric Gordon, and Andre Drummond, while re-signing veterans Kelly Oubre and Kyle Lowry.

At 30, Embiid remains at the top of his game, continuing to be the cornerstone of the Sixers’ championship ambitions. He has made the All-NBA team five times and won the 2023 NBA MVP award. Last season, he averaged 34.7 points per game, a number that placed him among the league’s most productive scorers.

According to ESPN, Embiid also became the first player since Wilt Chamberlain in 1961-62 to average over a point per minute.

While the Sixers have fallen short of championship glory in recent years, Embiid’s commitment to the team signals a renewed focus on bringing a title to Philadelphia. His goal is to deliver the city its first NBA championship since 1983.

“There is a lot more work to do,” Embiid said. “You guys deserve a championship, and I think we’re just getting started.”
