After a tough 24-3 loss to the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed that veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett will remain the team’s starter over Drake Maye entering Week 4 of the NFL season.

Despite a lackluster performance where Brissett managed only 98 passing yards, took five sacks, and led the offense to just three points, Mayo expressed his confidence in the quarterback’s toughness and grit.

However, the coaching staff remains aware that improvements are necessary across the board, from the offensive line to play-calling. With a critical stretch of games coming up, including matchups against the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins, the Patriots need to find answers quickly.

Brissett’s Tough Night and Maye’s NFL Debut

Jacoby Brissett struggled mightily against the Jets, facing constant pressure behind a makeshift offensive line that has allowed a league-high 11 sacks through three games.

The veteran completed 12 of 18 passes but was sacked five times, losing a significant 46 yards in the process. Brissett’s limited downfield vision and a lackluster running game, which produced just 78 yards, compounded the Patriots’ offensive woes.

Late in the game, with the outcome all but decided, rookie quarterback Drake Maye entered for his NFL debut. The No. 3 overall pick had been competing with Brissett for the starting job in training camp, and his insertion was seen as a chance for him to get valuable in-game experience.

In limited action, Maye completed 4 of 8 passes for 22 yards, scrambled for 12 yards on two rushes, and was sacked twice. Mayo praised the rookie’s poise but emphasized that the team will need to evaluate his performance closely.

“Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he’s not,” Mayo said, reaffirming his faith in the veteran. Yet, he acknowledged the need for improvement across the entire team. The Patriots have the next nine days to fix their issues before facing the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers.

Offensive Line Woes and the Road Ahead

A significant factor in Brissett’s rough start has been the Patriots’ offensive line, which has been decimated by injuries and poor play. Through three games, New England’s offensive line has allowed a staggering 48.6% pressure rate, the highest since 2016, according to ESPN.

The return of starting left guard Sidy Sow, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury, could provide a much-needed boost, but the struggles at left tackle persist.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye, New England Patriots Updates

As the Patriots prepare for a difficult stretch of games, including road contests against the 49ers and home games against division rivals, the focus will be on getting the offensive line in shape and ensuring the quarterback position remains stable. The upcoming game against the 49ers is crucial, as it could dictate the trajectory of New England’s season.

With Brissett at the helm and Maye waiting in the wings, the Patriots face a crucial juncture. Can they bounce back, or will the offensive line and quarterback struggles define their season?
