Despite the promise and excitement surrounding rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, the Chicago Bears have stumbled out of the gate, sitting at 1-2 after the first three weeks of the season.

Williams, the former Heisman Trophy winner, has struggled to find his rhythm, especially on offense, where his inexperience has become increasingly evident.

Through three games, Williams has posted a passer rating of just 65.3, with a completion percentage below 60%. These numbers reflect a difficult start, as he has thrown four interceptions compared to just two touchdowns.

As a result, the Bears’ offense currently ranks 30th in total yardage, a statistic that underscores their need for improvement.

NFL analyst Greg Cosell recently appeared on the Ross Tucker Podcast to offer insight into Williams’ early struggles.

According to Cosell, Williams’ discomfort in the pocket has been noticeable.

“You can tell that he’s not really comfortable from the pocket, overall, and he’s not really sure what he sees right now,” Cosell observed. He also emphasized that this is not unusual for rookie quarterbacks adjusting to the speed and complexity of NFL defenses.

Williams may have lit up the scoreboard during his days at USC, but the NFL is a different beast. No longer can he rely on his raw talent to casually post 50+ points and expect to walk away with easy victories.

In the pros, every yard is hard-fought, and every point is crucial—especially for a rookie quarterback trying to adjust to the speed and intricacies of the league.

One of the challenges Williams faces is acclimating to a new offensive system. The Bears opted to bring in Shane Waldron as their offensive coordinator, a coach who had a successful stint in Seattle, helping rejuvenate the career of Geno Smith. The hope was that Waldron could work similar magic with Williams, turning him into the face of the Bears’ franchise for years to come.

However, there’s a lingering question about whether Williams might have benefitted from a more familiar face guiding him through his rookie campaign. The Bears passed on the opportunity to hire one of Williams’ former college head coaches, Kliff Kingsbury, who is now orchestrating an impressive offensive resurgence with the Washington Commanders.

Kingsbury’s success in Washington has only added to the scrutiny surrounding Chicago’s decision-making and whether they made the right hire to pair with their prized young quarterback.

There’s no doubt that both Williams and Waldron need to find a way to kick-start the offense. The Bears are a storied franchise with a passionate fan base that has endured a long playoff drought, and their patience is wearing thin.

Chicago fans are hungry for success, and if the offense continues to falter, the pressure on the coaching staff and Williams will only intensify.

With the season still young, there’s time for Williams and the Bears to turn things around. But with each passing week, the expectations and scrutiny will only grow.

The question remains: can Caleb Williams overcome his early struggles and find a way to thrive in the NFL, or will Chicago’s search for a franchise quarterback continue?

For now, the spotlight shines brightly on Caleb Williams and the Bears’ offensive unit as they navigate a critical stretch in the season. If they can’t start producing, the heat in Chicago will only get hotter.
