The Baltimore Ravens made a notable move on Tuesday, re-signing cornerback Damarion “Pepe” Williams to their practice squad.

Williams, a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft from Houston, spent the last two seasons with the Ravens, contributing as a depth piece in the secondary and a special teams player.

His return comes at a crucial moment for the team, filling a void in their defensive depth.

In his rookie year, Williams appeared in 14 games, recording 24 tackles and two passes defended. Known for his versatility, Williams showcased his ability to play across various positions in the secondary.

Unfortunately, his 2023 campaign was derailed by an ankle injury that required surgery, limiting him to just one appearance last season.

Despite being cut from the Ravens’ final roster earlier this year, the 26-year-old now makes his return just over a month later, bringing a deep understanding of Baltimore’s defensive schemes. His ability to line up anywhere in the secondary is an asset, especially as the Ravens navigate their usual midseason roster shuffling.

The timing of Williams’ return is noteworthy, as it follows the loss of practice squad cornerback Ka’dar Hollman, who signed with the Houston Texans’ 53-man roster earlier on Tuesday.

Hollman, 30, had already suited up for three games this season with Baltimore but had exhausted his practice squad elevations, necessitating a permanent spot on a team’s active roster if he were to continue playing. The Texans saw the opportunity and added Hollman, who played in 17 games for them last season, primarily on special teams.

The Ravens will likely lean on Williams’ familiarity with their system as they prepare to host the surging Washington Commanders this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

With the Commanders on a hot streak, Baltimore’s defense will need all hands on deck, and Williams’ return could prove to be a timely addition.
