The Detroit Lions may have just lost defensive end Aidan Hutchinson for the season, which is an absolutely devastating blow to a defense that wasn’t particularly elite as it was.
That’s why Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder is suggesting that the Lions make a play for disgruntled New York Jets edge rusher Haason Reddick, who has been given permission to seek a trade.
“The former Eagle and current Jet is looking for a new contract, but Detroit has nearly $30 million of cap space to give him a new deal, according to Over The Cap,” Holder wrote.
The Lions had been floated as a potential landing spot for Reddick previously, so now that Hutchinson is sidelined, it makes even more sense for Detroit to pull the trigger.
The Jets acquired Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles back in March, but the two sides have been unable to come to terms on a contract extension.
As a result, Reddick has been holding out, and there appears to be no end in sight. For that reason, New York has decided to place him on the trade block with the Nov. 5 deadline quickly approaching.
Reddick is coming off of back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances. Last year, he registered 38 tackles and 11 sacks, but the year prior, he racked up 49 tackles, 16 sacks and five forced fumbles en route to finishing fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
The 30-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Temple, was originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals with the 13th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Reddick was a late bloomer, as he didn’t break out until his fourth season, when he registered 12.5 sacks with the Cardinals. He then moved on to the Carolina Panthers, where he spent one year before joining the Eagles in 2022.
The Detroit Lions have totaled 15 sacks on the year thus far, and it’s likely to be tough sledding for them without Hutchinson. Placing a call to the Jets to inquire about Reddick may be a great idea.
