VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (WAVY) — It was a day that Virginia Beach United won’t ever forget, for all the right reasons.

During Tuesday’s USL-2 playoff qualifying match, VB United took on South Carolina United in its first ever playoff game since their origin in 2019. Getting to this point was already accomplishment in itself, but as first-year head coach Chris Mills always says — no moral victories.

The game was level heading into halftime, and while South Carolina struck first, it didn’t stay that way for long.

In the 65th minute, former Churchland High School soccer player Alex Moody equalized off a beautiful cross.

The game was back-and-forth and would require extra-time. As a 757 product leveled the score, another 757 product ended up winning the game.

First Colonial High School’s Owen Ruddy slotted the game winner past the opposing goalkeeper, the VB United defense clamped down for the remaining seven minutes, and the final score was 2-1 in favor of Virginia Beach.

The historic playoff run continues to Newport News Friday, when VB United will play Salem in the first round of the Lionsbridge pod.

If both Virginia Beach and Lionsbridge were to win their Friday games, a third rubber match would be set for Sunday at Townebank Stadium.
