VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Police confirmed they shot and killed a suspect wielding a crowbar and metal rod while responding to a stabbing incident in Virginia Beach Saturday. One victim is dead and two others are critically injured.

On Sunday, police identified the suspect as 22-year-old Marques Hasbrouck of Virginia Beach.

Around 7 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a stabbing on White Beam Court. This is in a neighborhood off S. Plaza Trail and S. Independence Blvd. Upon arrival, they said Hasbrouck confronted them with a 20” crowbar and a 27” metal rod. According to police, Hasbrouck ignored commands to drop the weapons, and a taser was deployed. Police said the taser was ineffective and Hasbrouck charged at officers. VBPD Chief Paul Neudigate said officers needed to resort to using their firearms, resulting in the suspect’s death.

More than one officer fired their weapons and shot Hasbrouck, according to police. Hasbrouck was pronounced deceased by EMS personnel.

While inside the residence, officers found three victims, including a deceased woman. Police identified the woman as Victoria Lane Hasbrouck, 58, of Virginia Beach. The other two victims were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

At this time police are not looking for additional suspects.

“Our hearts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” said Neudigate. “Responding to domestic incidents is one of the most dangerous aspects of our job, with every encounter carrying with it the possibility of danger. These situations are often volatile and unpredictable, as was the case last night. We support our officers, the affected family, and our community as we navigate this difficult time together.”

The VBPD Homicide Unit is conducting a criminal investigation into this incident. Once the investigation is complete, all evidence will be turned over to the Virginia Beach Office of the Commonwealth Attorney (OCA) who will review for compliance with existing law.

Additionally, the OCA will conduct their own parallel, independent criminal investigation. Upon conclusion of the criminal investigations, the VBPD Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative review to determine compliance with department policy, procedure and training.
