While the public's fascination with mid-century modern homes is probably the strongest it's been in years, finding authentic MCM homes that haven't had their original character renovated away is easier said than done. Finding one also depends a lot on where you live, too. For example, you can find tons of iconic MCM homes in areas like Southern California, especially around Los Angeles, but if you're looking for one in, say, Virginia Beach, you're going to have a much harder time.

But that doesn't mean that rare gems aren't out there, and this stunning mid-century home in Virginia Beach is the very definition of one. Though this home has been fully renovated to the point where it's like new, it still retains its gorgeous, sleek mid-century character!

Virginia-based realtor Alexis Lohse (aka @varealestateagent ) brings us this stunner of a home tour. This five-bed, three-bath Virginia Beach home at 4213 Country Club Circle is situated on a private lakefront plot measuring around two and a half acres. That alone is a major selling point, but even more impressive is this home's authentic mid-century modern architecture, a relative rarity for upscale homes in the area.

    Classic Build, Modern Convenience

According to the property's Zillow listing , the property was originally built in 1962, and it shows through its architecture and layout. The sloping roof, open floor plan split between living spaces and sleeping areas, and large windows in nearly every room are classic features of a mid-century modern home. As Alexis points out, the bedrooms are surprisingly large for the era in which they were built. If anything, though, that's a positive deviation in style that only serves to enhance the home's beauty!

On the flip side, while the home's original layout was largely preserved, Alexis claims that everything else has been completely renovated inside and out: new flooring, new roof, new sidings, new plumbing, HVAC, electrical... you name it. By Alexis' estimation, it's "practically a brand new home."

I  will gripe a bit about the renovations, though, because the updated interiors have that awful "millennium gray" modern minimalist aesthetic that I personally loathe, and I think that undermines the home's mid-century modern characteristics. While mid-century modern and minimalist styles have a lot of overlap, traditional MCM interiors tend to have this warmth and color that's lacking in trendy, monochromatic "modern minimalism."

The good news is that a lot of that nostalgic warmth and hominess can be restored with just a little more cosmetic work: a new interior paint job, uncovering the wood trim, adding in some more colorful vintage furniture, etc. That is, if the future owner wants to lean into the mid-century vibes, of course!

A MCM Lakefront Retreat in Virginia Beach

While I've got my reservations about the minimalist decor and monochromatic color scheme , this property still has a ton going for it, from its authentic (yet surprisingly spacious) vintage architectural style and modern utilities to the absolutely breathtaking lakefront property it sits on. This lake house is bound to make some lucky buyer's dreams come true - provided they can foot the home's $1,298,500 cost.

Could you be that lucky buyer? If so, you can request a tour with the listing's real estate agent (Jonathan Goldman of Live Oak Real Estate) via the Zillow link above. A rare MCM lakefront retreat like this home deserves a lot of love!
