Court docs: Bay Colony burglar may have had key to home, tried to break into safe

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The man who broke into a vacant house on the 1500 block of East Bay Shore Drive, inciting a large SWAT response Monday morning, may have had a key to the house.

That’s according to new court documents that lay out what happened.

According to the police narrative, 42-year-old Andrew Klonowski entered the home in the Bay Colony neighborhood sometime before 6 a.m. wearing all black clothing.

“Officers approached the home and the male opened the door, saw police and went back in and shut the door,” a criminal complaint reads. “This initiated a SWAT [response that] found the male hiding in insulation in the attic.”

Officers recovered clothes along with a collection of tools next to a safe the suspect had attempted to break open.

The document explains that police couldn’t find where Klonowski broke into the home, suggesting that he may have used a key to open a door. The owner of the property told police his house key had been stolen by contractors in recent weeks.

Klonowski is facing charges for burglary at night to commit a felony, possession of burglary tools and damage to property. His next court date is set for Oct. 11.
