‘Every penny counts.’ Anticipation rises for Virginia’s 3-day sales tax holiday

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia Beach resident Thomas Primus told 10 On Your Side he is excited for the return of Virginia sales tax free weekend , saying he’s ready to save money.

“Looking forward to getting some school shopping done,” Primus said. “Trying to get some clothes and shoes for the kids.”

Virginia’s three-day sales tax holiday is from 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 2, to 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 4.

“I think it’s something that you know is needed,” said J. Gibbs, a community member. He is also celebrating the holiday with his children in mind.

Primus said in previous tax-free weekends, the savings made a difference.

“$50/$60 bucks or so,” Primus said. “Nothing too, too crazy, but every penny counts especially in this economy.”

Primus recalls benefiting from this type of discount when he was a kid.

“We used to do the same thing in North Carolina, where I lived at,” Primus said. “So I’m familiar with tax-free weekend. So when I was in school, like in high school, middle school, my parents would always get our shoes during tax free weekend. So it was very beneficial for us.”

Williamsburg and Norfolk Premium Outlets will also be participating in tax-free weekend, with qualified school supplies at $20 or less per item and qualified clothing and footwear at $100 or less per item.

On Aug. 2, Williamsburg Premium Outlets will participate in a school supplies drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in partnership with the Williamsburg House of Mercy . During the drive, children will be able to enjoy free face painting at the Croc’s Carter’s Sidewalk.

Primus said he will also take advantage of the holiday’s deals for hurricane and emergency supplies.

“Definitely want to stock up on extra water,” Primus said. “Batteries flashlights, things of that sort.”
