When someone tells you to be cool, they're not kidding. In Farmer Finishers this week, a word of caution: anything and everything will start a fire. I responded to one this week at the shooting range north of Billings. Anything could trigger a blaze that we could end up fighting for months. They are starting to get a handle on some of the largest fires in Montana. In the Lewis and Clark Forest, they have one about 25% contained, and the same with the one in Rosebud County. They did open the Tongue Reservoir but are advising it’s smoky, as you can imagine.

Blacktail Canyon Fire evacuation warning remains
BUTTE, Mont. — The Blacktail Canyon Fire southeast of Butte is down to an estimated 68 acres , but an evacuation warning remains in place for nearby residents. Butte Silver-Bow law enforcement officials are asking residents on Blacktail Canyon Road southeast of Homestake Road and Homestake Road east of Blacktail Canyon Road to be prepared to evacuate. An evacuation order has not been issued.

Environmentalist Lawsuit Opens Door for Deadly, Destructive Wildfire
A Montana wildfire that is charring forestland just east of Helena, Montana, and led to the death of a firefighter may be able to trace its roots to a courtroom. Approved in 2021 by the US Forest Service, the Middleman Project planned logging and prescribed burning treatments across 53,131 acres in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest (HLCNF) within the Big Belt Mountain Range. The goals were to enhance wildlife habitat, improve forest health and reduce the possibility of wildfire.
