During my recent visit to Beijing Station, I decided to try their braised pork rice. The taste was reminiscent of American Chinese food, a departure from the traditional flavors I was expecting.
The menu is a pan-Asian mix of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese inspired items. They occasionally introduce interesting specials which is a nice surprise. However, I was disappointed to find out that they no longer serve Chinese crepes, a personal favorite. I also tried their new addition, chicken cold noodles. The spiciness was to my liking, but the noodles were a bit too soft for my taste.
On the other hand, the sesame noodles and mapo tofu left much to be desired. The noodles were overcooked and the sauce was more of a clear sugary syrup, lacking the sesame flavor. The mapo tofu was more like a soup with unseasoned tofu chunks and sausage pieces, a far cry from the multidimensional flavor this dish usually offers.
A friend of mine ordered the beef dry noodles and found it quite tasty. However, the pho was a letdown, it was just boiled rice noodles without any additional ingredients.
Despite the mixed experiences, Beijing Station is a convenient spot for a quick serve Chinese meal. But, it might be worth exploring other eateries nearby for a more authentic experience.
