    Claytor Lake's name origin

Only in Your State suggests that Claytor Lake State Park in Pulaski County may not be well known. Locals enjoy this spot for church picnics, hiking, swimming, and personal relaxation.

Claytor is a well-known name in SWVA because of the African American family of professionals and the Claytor building in the Gainsboro area of NW Roanoke. Over the years, people have asked if Claytor Lake might have been named after the prominent family of dentists, doctors, and lawyers.

Could the Roanoke family be related to Graham Claytor?

Appalachian History reveals the lake was named after Graham Claytor, Sr., a senior executive of American Gas and Electric Company (later Appalachian Power Company), the utility that built the dam in 1937-39.

If the Roanoke Claytor family and Graham Claytor are ever confirmed to be related via DNA, they would be connected to the name of the State Park. Nevertheless, Claytor Lake remains popular among those who enjoy the atmosphere and return again and again.
