Rui Jaing is found competent to stand trial

In September 2023, Rui Jiang of Falls Church, Virginia, entered the sanctuary of Park Valley Church in Haymarket with several firearms. His girlfriend alerted authorities after reading disturbing social media posts on Instagram. According to CNN, Jiang was a bitter man.

He said he was "angry at God and men' for keeping him from having romantic relationships with women. He admitted to authorities that he was armed inside the church but claimed he was not going to harm anyone. He also acknowledged he is frequently armed because he has a concealed carry permit.

Jaing was initially charged in state court, but federal prosecutors took over the case earlier thsi year. The AP says he was arrested, and his case was placed on hold until a competency hearing held this past Wednesday in Alexandria, where a judge found him competent to stand trial. The AP says the trial date has been set for October 21.
