WTOP News reports that a centuries-old home remedy is making a comeback as a new health trend for physical fitness. Online creators say they drink baking soda in water to balance their PH levels, reduce acidity in their muscles and decrease fatigue.

Dr. Christie Youssef, a family medicine practitioner with Kaiser Permanente in Fair Oaks, Virginia, said the resurgence of this natural remedy is due to social media. She warns that too much baking soda can reduce stomach acid to levels that cause health problems.

Youssef added that two or three teaspoons of baking soda in water should be safe, but there is no medical science to back up the claims that it enhances muscle performance. Epic Natural Health suggests drinking a half teaspoon of baking soda in water daily for multiple health benefits.
