The Legend of Black Charley was a Blaxploitation Western shot in Jamaica, Eve's Ranch, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Arizona, and Charles City, Virginia. Initially titled The Legend of Ni**er Charley, it starred Fred Williamson and caused much controversy.

Released in 1972, the film received backlash for two reasons. Native Americans were upset with the way they were going to be portrayed, and outrage over the name led to its change from Ni**er Charley to Black Charley.

Despite the protests in 1973, Williamson starred in the sequel The Soul of Ni**er Charley in 1975, he starred in Boss Ni**er.
