Motorcycle safety in Virginia should be taken seriously

If you drive or ride on Virginia roads, you may have noticed the dangerous habits of motorcycle drivers. The DMV offers a safety course for motorcyclists, but speeding and driving between other vehicles continue.

On September 5, Daily Voice Fairfax reported that a 23-year-old driver in Prince William County died after colliding with a Mack truck. Authorities said speed was an issue.

WAVY News reports that in 2023, there were 2,127 crashes on Virginia roads involving motorcyclists, and 80 deaths have occurred thus far in 2024.

“Speed absolutely kills,” Captain Pete Cimbal with the Chesterfield County Police Department said. “[A motorcycle is] a smaller vehicle. They often move at high speeds, have capability of making erratic movements, and drivers need to be aware constantly of the vehicles around them.”
